Dr. Eric Smadja and Finnish Psychoanalytical Society are organising a Webinar concerning contemporary couples.
Contemporary couples have become unstable, fragile, polymorphous and demanding. In the webinar Dr. Smadja explores them by taking a twofold, psychoanalytic and sociological approach.
Starting from the historicity of the very notion of couple he first proposes his personal and multidimensional view, which constitutes an initial, theoretical construction.
Then he looks at their essential characteristics, both psychological and sociological, which leads to questions about contemporary society on the basis of certain aspects proper to it. He introduces some new notions and concepts like couple work, structural conflictualities (psychical and socio-
cultural), conjugal culture. Finally he undertakes a socio-psychoanalytical reflection considering also that contemporary couples are fashioned by different categories of recent major changes which he also examines.

Dr. Eric Smadja is a psychiatrist, a psychoanalyst, a member of the Société Psychanalytique de Paris, a guest member of the British Psychoanalytical Society and a couples psychoanalyst. He works both in Paris and London.
He is also an anthropologist, an associate member of the American anthropological Association and a member of the Society for Psychological Anthropology. In 2007 he was awarded the IPA´s Prize for ” Exceptional Contribution made to psychoanalytical Research.”
